TIAN TARU

Indigo Dyeing Studio in Bali.

TianTaru is a small family-run studio dedicated to indigo dyeing. Gifted with three indigo cuttings 12 years ago, the family transformed a depleted piece of land into a thriving 2-hectare plantation, divided into two properties. Here, the indigo grows in harmony with nature, untouched by artificial interference.

TianTaru's family is committed to maintaining a harmonious balance between nature throughout their process and actively explores ways to create a vat without importing foreign minerals, aiming to keep the process rooted within their village. Drawing inspiration from their journeys to Bhutan, Japan, and other indigo-rich locations, the team experiments with new recipes to achieve this goal. The dream is to share more of their profound love for indigo in the near future, fostering a passionate community dedicated to preserving this timeless art form.

Sustainability Management

To nurture their indigo, Tiantaru's team took a unique approach. Recognizing the need for optimal conditions, they planted a native forest to shield the indigo from the harsh sun. Over two years, they meticulously collected seedlings from native trees and tree ferns, ensuring the plantation maintained its natural essence. The once exhausted soil, worn out from years of overplanting, rejuvenated under the vibrant tropical climate.

What sets Tiantaru apart is the natural appearance of their plantation. To someone unfamiliar, it resembles a lush jungle, not a conventional indigo plantation. The rapid transformation of this once desolate land into a thriving oasis illustrates the magic of native growth in the tropics.
