Giving New Life to Wood:
The Beauty and Benefits of Reclaimed Timber

Reclaimed wood, with its timeless charm and eco-friendly credentials, has become a sought-after material for interior design and construction. Reclaimed wood is timber that has had a previous life, typically as part of old buildings, barns, or industrial structures. It undergoes a meticulous process of salvaging, refurbishing, and repurposing for new applications. This wood, often rich in character and history, can come from a variety of sources, including oak, pine, and chestnut. The aging process, with exposure to the elements, gives reclaimed wood its unique patina, which is a key part of its appeal. It’s important to note that this wood is distinct from new wood and is considered a sustainable building material.

Reclaimed wood offers various advantages that extend well beyond its aesthetic appeal.

Benefits of Reclaimed Wood

ECO-FRIENDLY CHOICE

Reclaimed wood is an eco-conscious choice. By reusing existing wood, it reduces the demand for new timber, preserving forests and diminishing the environmental impact of logging.

HISTORY AND CHARACTER

Each piece of reclaimed wood tells a story. Its weathered appearance, complete with knots, nail holes, and patina, adds character and history to your space. It’s a nod to the past that can’t be replicated with new wood.

DURABILITY AND STRENGTH

Reclaimed wood often boasts remarkable strength and durability, thanks to its years of seasoning. It can outlast many new wood products and stand up to everyday wear and tear.

UNIQUE AESTHETIC

The distinctive appearance of reclaimed wood is unparalleled. It provides a warm, rustic, and inviting ambiance, making it a favored choice for interior design.

VERSATILITY

Reclaimed wood can be used in a wide range of applications, from flooring and furniture to accent walls and ceilings. It’s a versatile material that adapts to various design styles.

REDUCED CARBOON FOOTPRINT

By using reclaimed wood, you help reduce the carbon footprint associated with new timber production and transportation. It’s a tangible way to contribute to environmental conservation.

HEALTHY INDOOR AIR

Unlike some new wood products, reclaimed wood typically contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or chemicals. It contributes to better indoor air quality in your home.

SUPPORTING LOCAL ECONOMIES

Purchasing reclaimed wood often supports local businesses engaged in the reclamation and repurposing of wood, boosting local economies.

COSTUMIZATION

Reclaimed wood can be tailored to your unique preferences. Whether you desire a contemporary look or a vintage feel, it can be customized to meet your design vision.

SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

Using reclaimed wood aligns with a sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle, demonstrating your commitment to responsible consumption and environmental stewardship.

"Opting for reclaimed wood helps reduce the demand for fresh timber, thereby contributing to the preservation of vital ecosystems."

We aspire to witness changes in the regulations pertaining to the classification of new or reclaimed ulin wood, along with the establishment of a permanent ban on rendaman (fake reclaimed wood).

THE ASA MAIA : PIONEERING ECO-FRIENDLY LUXURY WITH RECLAIMED WOOD INTERIORS

The Asa Maia also becomes a member that uses reclaimed wood to not only create a warm and welcoming environment for its guests but also to champion the values of environmental responsibility and conservation.  Approximately 90% of the wood used in the construction of the property is reclaimed wood, a testament to their commitment to eco-conscious design. The ten guest suites, designed with a deep respect for tradition, are crafted from century-old wooden structures known as Gladaks, which are traditional Javanese homes. Each Gladak, with a name representing its region of origin in East Java, was carefully disassembled, transported, and meticulously reassembled on the site, preserving their unique history. The property’s yoga Shala is a modified Limasan, a teak-built Javanese residence dating back 100-150 years. Reclaimed teak wood can be found throughout the property, including in the flat ceilings, library, stairway to the restaurant, cabinets, and railings. Even the scrap wood finds new life as it’s creatively repurposed into hotel amenities and furniture. Asa Maia’s commitment to sustainable practices is woven into the very fabric of its design and ethos.
