Meet Fonny Makatita:
General Manager of Titik Dua Ubud

Titik Dua Hotel Ubud is a premier sanctuary for conscious travelers, built around a passion for contemporary Indonesian design, art, culture, film, music, and community. More than just a stay, Titik Dua Hotel Ubud offers a holistic boutique experience, blending Modernity and Tradition with vibrant creative events and programming. This blend is reflected in the name, which means colon (:) in Bahasa Indonesia, a mark used to introduce deeper elaborations and bridge people with new, meaningful experiences.

Could you introduce yourself and share a little about your personal journey and background?

"My name is Fonny Makatita. I was born and raised in Bali, and I’ve spent around 15 years in hospitality and the creative community in between. I’ve witnessed the community evolve, from Kuta as a surfing spot, to Legian, the bustling energy of Seminyak, Canggu in 2016–2017 during The Slow era, and now Ubud for the past six years. I’ve seen how the market has shifted over time, and how creativity continues to move with it."

What was the original idea behind creating Titik Dua, and what gap did you feel it could fill?

"The initial idea was to create a creative space while providing hospitality, especially for those who might need a space to create, connect and collaborate."

'We needed more space to talk about creativity and support the creative industry, and it also creates sustainability."

The name Titik Dua means a colon (:), a symbol that invites deeper exploration. How does this idea translate into the way guests experience the hotel?

"The colon represents many subjects beyond hospitality, deeper elaboration. It creates a blank canvas for curious minds, creative people who enjoy expressing themselves. And also becomes the space they need to interpret in their own way."

Why was it important for Titik Dua to function as a creative platform, not just a place to stay?

"It’s essential. We needed more space to talk about creativity and support the creative industry, and it also creates sustainability. "

You describe sustainability as a continuum between people, place, and purpose. What does that mean in practice?

"Sustainability is not an alien concept in Bali, especially when talking about the environment, green practices, or even as a hotel brand standard, which is a good thing. But we also need to focus on local human resources. Are they sustainable? As a platform where people earn their living, we must keep developing them by involving them, offering fair wages, and sharing knowledge about how the world is moving. This way, we can grow stronger for the future together. Because the key is mindset."

How did you approach balancing modern design with cultural sensitivity?

"Move in harmony, finding the fine line where tradition and modernity can coexist. Create a space where culture is not forgotten, but supported, where both can feel relevant to today’s generation without losing their roots. And I think this creates a safe space to grow and to keep the dialogue alive.

These genuine interactions are precious because Bali still has its charm. It simply needs the right tuning to dance between tradition and modern life."

What role do partnerships with communities, artisans, and curators play in keeping Titik Dua authentic and evolving?

"A big role, shout-out to everyone who’s been part of our journey over the past six years. They remind us why this space exists. Our commitment is to provide even more room to create together as we continue developing and hopefully launch new spaces this year and next year. "

The gallery and rotating exhibitions create an ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation. How do you curate this balance while staying true to Indonesian voices?

"Stay Re-present, by meaning also attending and supporting their events, connecting with them, and inviting them in, collaborating. We keep it inclusive yet exclusive at the same time. It’s about maintaining balance while continuing the conversation."

With the upcoming Coca Creative Complex and new rooms launching in 2026, how do you see Titik Dua evolving while staying grounded in its original values?

"We are still holding on to our original values, and for us, growth is about listening more closely. With the upcoming facilities, Titik Dua is evolving in response to years of conversations with our guests and the creative community. The scale may expand, but the intention remains the same "
