Tian Taru: A Small Family-run Studio
dedicated to Indigo Dyeing in Bali

Gifted with three indigo cuttings 12 years ago, the family transformed a depleted piece of land into a thriving 2-hectare plantation, divided into two properties. The indigo here grows in harmony with nature, untouched by artificial interference.

To nurture their indigo, the passionate team at Tian Taru took a unique approach. Recognizing the need for optimal conditions, they planted a native forest to shield the indigo from the harsh sun. Over two years, they meticulously collected seedlings from native trees and tree ferns, ensuring the plantation maintained its natural essence. The once exhausted soil, worn out from years of overplanting, rejuvenated under the vibrant tropical climate.

From extracting dye from the leaves to guiding enthusiasts on vat creation and dyeing techniques, Tian Taru opens its doors to those eager to delve into the world of indigo.

What sets Tian Taru apart is the natural appearance of their plantation. To someone unfamiliar, it resembles a lush jungle, not a conventional indigo plantation. The rapid transformation of this once desolate land into a thriving oasis is a testament to the magic of native growth in the tropics.

Within the studio, a deeper exploration of indigo takes place. For the past four years, they have generously shared their indigo expertise. From extracting dye from the leaves to guiding enthusiasts on vat creation and dyeing techniques, Tian Taru opens its doors to those eager to delve into the world of indigo.

Currently developing a new way to share their lifestyle, Tian Taru invites artists for a two-night, three-day experience, allowing them to work on their chosen material using indigo. The studio has hosted creative minds working on diverse materials such as horse and goat hair, leather, wood, and other natural fibers. This collaboration not only enriches the artists’ knowledge but also broadens the horizons of indigo application.

Looking ahead, Tian Taru‘s family is committed to maintaining a harmonious balance between nature throughout their process and actively explores ways to create a vat without importing foreign minerals, aiming to keep the process rooted within their village. Drawing inspiration from their journeys to Bhutan, Japan, and other indigo-rich locations, the team experiments with new recipes to achieve this goal. The dream is to share more of their profound love for indigo in the near future, fostering a passionate community dedicated to preserving this timeless art form.
