INTERVIEW

'Falling in love with Bali and witnessing its destruction has had a profound impact on us and is a driving force behind our work.'

COULD YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND ROLE?

"My name is Andy Grant, I’m the CEO of Spring Spas and East Day Spas in Indonesia and New Zealand. I’ve been living in Bali for the past eight years, and while Bali is home, I’m fortunate to be able to travel regularly between here and New Zealand. My professional background is quite diverse—I began in banking and eventually transitioned into marketing, wellness, and the salon industry. That mix of experience has helped shape my approach to building meaningful, conscious wellness experiences."

WHAT WAS THE VISION BEHIND OPENING SPRING SPA IN NUSA LEMBONGAN, AND WHAT SETS IT APART?

"My role was to bring to life the vision of our founder, Ina Bajaj, who purchased the land just before COVID. Her goal was to create an oceanfront sanctuary of wellness and well-being — a place that embraces the natural surroundings not just in its design but also in its treatment philosophy.

Our Nusa Lembongan spa draws inspiration from our established locations in Bali and New Zealand. I worked closely with Ina’s business partner, Pak Kadek from Kadekcons, to execute the plans and complete the build. While COVID temporarily brought the island to a standstill, it also gave us the time to refine the concept, perfect the details, and develop the property into what it is today."

WHY ARE SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES SO IMPORTANT IN THE WELLNESS INDUSTRY?

"The wellness industry, like many others, involves the use of materials and resources that can impact the environment. For us, sustainability isn't an afterthought—it's essential. From reducing waste to sourcing locally, we work hard to promote eco-friendly practices across all aspects of our spas. We also prioritize working with like-minded partners who share our environmental values."

'We consider physical, proven, and demonstrated solutions to be highly valuable because people often trust what they can see.'

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIFICS SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IMPLEMENTED AT SPRING SPA?

"Sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations. We grow many of the ingredients used in our treatments and our bar menu right on site—plants like aloe vera, papaya, moringa, pandan, lemongrass, and various flowers. We compost leftover materials from treatments to nourish our gardens.

In our treatment rooms, amenities are stored in refillable stone dispensers and sourced from a local Bali skincare brand. These small choices add up and help reduce waste without compromising the quality or hygiene of our services."

HOW DO YOU INTEGRATE LOCALLY SOURCED AND ORGANIC INGREDIENTS INTO YOUR TREATMENTS?

"Locally sourced, organic ingredients are at the heart of our treatment philosophy at Spring Spa. Approximately 80% of our menu is crafted using natural or organic elements, many of which are hand-blended on-site. We’ve even curated a dedicated collection of treatments that use 100% locally sourced materials, such as Lembongan seaweed and sea salt—both farmed and harvested right here on the island. These ingredients are not only effective and sustainable, but they also honor the land and the local community.

For treatments that require more advanced formulations, we partner with Codage Paris, whose products are made with over 90% natural ingredients—35% of which are eco-certified. In our hair salon, we work with Davines, a B-Corp certified brand known for using biodegradable and naturally derived ingredients. These partnerships allow us to uphold both performance and sustainability, without compromising on quality or our values."

CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT YOUR WATER SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS AT SPRING SPA LEMBONGAN?

"Being on a small island, we were mindful not to rely on limited local water resources. To ensure self-sufficiency, we installed our own reverse osmosis (RO) system that draws seawater and filters it through an advanced purification process to produce clean, drinkable water. This water is used throughout the spa—for showers, treatments, gardens, and in the reusable glass bottles we offer to guests. The system not only supports our sustainability goals but also eliminates the need for single-use plastics entirely."

WHAT ARE YOUR BROADER HOPES FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN BALI'S BUSINESS LANDSCAPE?

"Bali is a special place with a rich culture, and as business leaders, we all have a responsibility to protect it. Development is inevitable, but we must approach it mindfully. I believe that no matter the industry, every business should try to incorporate sustainable practices—whether through materials, operations, or partnerships. By working together as a community, we can help preserve Bali for future generations and honor the culture that makes this island so unique. "
