2026 Sustainability Overview by The Punch Team
"The Asa Maia’s continued commitment to sustainable living and lessening our burden on the environment is enshrined in our founding principles."
The Asa Maia
Heritage & Low-Impact Design
The Asa Maia is built within restored century-old Javanese Gladak houses, preserving cultural heritage while extending the life of traditional architecture. Construction and interiors use durable, natural materials such as teak wood, iron, andesite stone, copper, and Belgian blue stone, chosen for longevity and reduced environmental impact.
Plastic-Free Operations
Plastic reduction is central to daily operations. A reverse osmosis filtration system provides clean drinking water throughout the property, eliminating the need for bottled water. Almost no plastic is used across the resort, with zero plastic packaging for amenities and refillable or biodegradable alternatives in place.
Sustainable Sourcing
The Asa Maia prioritises local, organic, and responsibly produced ingredients for both its kitchen and spa. By working closely with local suppliers, the resort supports regional economies while reducing transport-related emissions and ensuring traceable, high-quality sourcing.
Waste & Resource Management
Composite waste management systems are used to separate and recycle waste streams, minimising landfill impact. These structured processes support a cleaner operation and encourage responsible resource use throughout the property.
Chemical-Free Practices
To protect both guest wellbeing and the surrounding environment, The Asa Maia avoids harsh chemicals in cleaning and landscaping. Non-chemical practices support healthier ecosystems and contribute to a more restorative guest experience.

Local Employment & Skills Development
Local employment is prioritised, with ongoing training and career development opportunities offered to staff. This approach supports long-term livelihoods while strengthening local knowledge and hospitality skills.
Guest Awareness & Conscious Living
Sustainability at The Asa Maia is experiential. Through heritage design, plastic-free systems, local sourcing, and mindful programming, guests are invited to engage with conscious practices first-hand — gaining practical awareness and inspiration that extends beyond their stay.
